Category: High School (HS) and above.

  • 8-week duration
  • Paid internship with stipend approximately between $500 and $1000
    Recommended pre-step: Participation in Research track of Mafiq’s COOOL Summer program to understand research tools and methodology 
  • An average of 10 hours per week is required to work on the project. A log sheet will be implemented to document students’ effort

Proposed Format: (Not to exceed 3 pages)

TITLE:  Descriptive Title of Proposal

YOUR & YOUR MENTOR’S CONTACT INFORMATION:

BACKGROUND: – 15 points

What is the problem statement? Why is this research needed? Outline previous work in this field (i.e. literature search). How would the results of the proposed research fill this need and be beneficial? 

HYPOTHESIS & OBJECTIVE: – 15 points

State your hypothesis and describe how it could help solve your problem.  Describe what specifically this project will accomplish. Characterize the scope of what is being accomplished.

METHODOLOGY and APPROACH: – 50 points

This section needs to answer self-imposed questions and should reflect that the student has a good understanding of the problem and of the barriers in the path. Some of the questions that should be answered include- 

(a) What are the constraints (if any)? 

(b) What are the technical challenges and uncertainties? 

(c) What are the different approaches to this problem? 

(d) What is your preferred approach and why? 

Explain your methodology to conduct the research and to obtain the stated objectives.

DELIVERABLES: – 10

Itemize the list of deliverables with rough dates so that you can make a concerted effort to achieve them.   How would you define “success”?

IMPACT – 10 points

If you’re successful, what difference will it make?   What impact will success have?  How will it be measured?

Problem Statement: 

What problem in your community do you intend to solve? 

Why is this problem important to your community and how does it relate to the given theme?

What types of resources do you plan to use to complete your research?

Hypothesis

State your hypothesis and describe how it could help solve your problem. 

How do you plan to measure the validity of your hypothesis?   

How do you plan to measure the success of your hypothesis?

Data Collection and Analysis Strategy

There are many questionable sources of information found on the internet or person to be interviewed.  How will you determine if your research information is valid and scientifically acceptable?

State your proposed experimental process and procedures.  

State the types of data you will be collecting and the types of analysis you will be conducting and how do you plan to organize your data in support of your research project.

Outline a tentative schedule of your time commitment and the tasks that you plan to accomplish in support of the project.  

30-minute presentation, 15 to 20 slides maximum.  

20 min Q&A

Formal presentation with ppt slides is required.  

A final report is required at the end of the program.  

Suggested outlines of your PowerPoint slides

– Slide 1: Project tile, Mentor/interns names, Internship title, one-line “gem” 

– Slides 2 & 3: Background info, the motivation behind the research, goals, why did you participate?

– Slides 4 to the last but two: Methodology, (hypothesis, proposed model, design of experiments/data survey, observation & analysis, results)

– The last but one: Conclusion slide: Summarize what you achieved/didn’t and what could be done in the future.

– The last Slide: (list) Lessons learned from the summer internship- what did you learn throughout the process. (It could be either a scientific technique or data collection methodology or data analysis, etc) What are your recommendations for future interns and mentors to make the internship more meaningful?

Mid-term Evaluation:

Data Collection and Analysis Strategy (90%)

Explain the resources that you used and the challenges that you are experiencing, if any.

Explain the analysis that you have performed and the trends in your results.

Explain any mid-course correction/changes in the planned approach, and why such changes are needed?

Explain what your data indicate in support t of your hypothesis

Planned Schedule (10%)

Update your schedule, if any, and explain any significant changes on the planned schedule and state the reasons for such changes.

 

Final Evaluation:

Application of the Scientific Method (50%)

Effective use of scientific methods and problem-solving strategies

Research is extensive and sources are reputable

Conclusions formulated are logical based on data collected

Benefit to the Community (20%)

Proposed solution could have a positive impact on the whole/partial community

Direct demonstration of the benefit of the solution on the community

Potential that the proposed solution might be implemented

Innovation, Creativity, and Originality (30%)

Creative use of data collection and data analysis

Creative model to represent the solution and implementation strategy

Note: A minimum score of 80% is recommended for subsequent continuation into next year.

*Please be respectful to everyone, including fellow competitors. *If you need to enter or exit a room, please wait to do so in between presentations, as to be respectful to the presenter. *Judges are not permitted to open or close doors, so that they may focus on the competitor’s presentation without distraction. *Participants that are waiting for their turn must remain silent. *Do not distract judges, the presenter or audience. Parents are not permitted to raise questions about the judging during the event. Any dispute must be submitted to [email protected] in writing Jazakum Allahu Khairun for your cooperation!
